休伊·皮尔斯·朗是美国路易斯安那州州长、联邦参议员[1]。卡斯特罗·卡拉索是路易斯安那州立大学乐队指挥，此前曾任新奥尔良罗斯福酒店乐团指挥，后由休伊·朗亲自挖角到路易斯安那州立大学[2]。歌曲于1935年创作，由休伊·朗作词，卡斯特罗·卡拉索作曲[3]。

“人人皆无冕之王”（Every man a king, but no one wears a crown）一句本为民主党总统候选人威廉·詹宁斯·布莱恩之语[4]，而休伊·朗以“人人皆王”的口号著称[5]。“人人皆王”一名除了是休伊·朗1933年的自传之名外[6]，也同时是大萧条期间其推行的分享财富计划的口号[7]。歌词主要是在宣传休伊·朗的分享财富计划[1]，其中包含“为所有人提供城堡、衣服和食物，这一切都属于你”（With castles and clothing and food for all, all belongs to you）一句[8]。

歌曲先后由路易斯安那男孩（Louisiana Boys）于1935年1月（标签：Bluebird B-5840）[3]与路易斯安那漫步者（Louisiana Ramblers）于同年10月休伊·朗遇刺身亡几星期后（标签：Decca 5151）[9]翻唱。创作歌手兰迪·纽曼在其1974年的专辑《好老男孩》中亦翻唱了此歌曲[10][11]。
